 Tolstoi, whose home life brought both bliss and bale, says, "All happy families are alike: every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." It is part of the human condition that we draw our greatest sorrows from the closest relations we know. We honor, then, the healers who can teach us to keep the wellsprings of our loves fresh and full and sweet: and most we honor those rare practitioners like this lady whose own lives exemplify their precepts.
For more than forty years she has helped ease and avoid suffering in Charlotte and the state. Daughter of a fine country doctor, herself a physician and the wife of a physician, she follows the one great aim of her profession: to get sick people well. Her trail-blazing works in mental health, drug education, family life, and sex education are justly celebrated and have earned her awards of many kinds. Less well-known is her readiness personally to share in the heartbreak of the troubled. To her, no human woe is clinical or academic: every one in need is her neighbor, and more: her flesh and blood.
